Following an intense opening day of speed trials, Day 2 of the CoreComm Solar Boat Challenge 2026 brings an exciting blend of hands-on robotics, energy strategy, and endurance racing to Balatonalmádi.

Saturday pushes the ten university teams on two fronts: solving an autonomous robotics challenge on land in the morning, followed by a demanding long-distance strategic navigation race on Lake Balaton in the afternoon.

CoreComm – Aumovio Engineering Workshop: LEGO Robotics & Autonomous Navigation

The day kicked off at 10:00 with the CoreComm – Aumovio Workshop for Engineers, a premier technical competition session.

Rather than working on their boats, student engineers were tasked with programming LEGO robots to autonomously conquer a complex obstacle course. The challenge tested core software architecture, sensor integration, and algorithmic problem-solving under tight time constraints, emphasizing the close tie between university talent and industrial automation leaders.

The Main Event: Ton’s Race (Expected Start at 13:00)

On the water, Saturday’s feature discipline is the Ton’s Race, modeled after classic star-tour sailing regattas.

How the Rules Work:

  • Course Structure: Starting from the central starting gate, the course features 5 distinct outward legs connecting various turning buoys.

  • Valid Scoring: A leg is only counted toward a team’s total distance when sailed as a full round trip (out to the buoy and back to the start gate).

  • Tactics & Decision-Making: Teams have complete freedom to choose the sequence and repetition of the legs they attempt within the open time window.

  • The Winner: The team completing the highest total distance within the time limit claims victory.

Tactical Challenge: Cloud Cover and Rising Balaton Winds

Today’s race will be a high-stakes test of power management. Overcast morning skies have severely restricted solar irradiance, meaning teams cannot rely on steady real-time solar charging.

With gusty winds and chop building across the eastern basin of Lake Balaton, pilots must carefully balance aggressive throttle use against strict battery discharge limits to avoid running out of power before completing their final legs.
