Balaton Solar Boat Challenge

The Notice of Race presented in this document were drawn up to serve as directives for the race. Situations that are not covered by the Rules will be decisively resolved at the sole discretion of the jury.

1. Aim and purpose of the Solar Sport One events
1.1. The aim of the Solar Sport One events is to organize a top solar boat event in order to:
– promote sustainable technology amongst the youth and more in particular students at technical universities and professional training colleges, supported by firms in (boat) technology.
– stimulate the promotion and development of sustainable boats, in particular with respect to the application of solar energy in the shipbuilding industry.

2. Organizing authority/race organization
2.1. The organizing authority of the event is Pannon Egyetem, University of Pannonia Hungary (https://solarboat.uni-pannon.hu/contact/) together with
Stichting Solar Sport One.
2.2. On behalf of the organizing authority the Solar Sport One 2023 events are carried out under the management of the project director. The race organization can be contacted throughout the year on the following address:

3. Rules
3.1. The race will be conducted subject to the provisions of this Notice of Race (NR), the current 2023 version of the Technical Regulations (TR), the current 2023 version of the Race Elements Catalogue (REC), the current 2023 version of the Race Instructions (RI). The event area: Lake Balaton is a restricted water area with special rules. So please make sure to check the following:
– under 14,7 KW and under 8m length there is no need to have boat driving license
– above 14,7 KW and/or above 8m length the skipper must have a boat driving license (any kind form any country accepted)
– all boats must be registered at Hungarian Sailing federation (registration can be done through registration website).
– if boat is above 14,7 KW and 8m need to have special permit from the Hungarian Shipping Authority. The Hungarian Sailing Federation will complete the registrational procedure for the sailers based on the information provided at the registration form.

Note:
If teams want to bring support boat with internal conbustion engines the same procedure needs to be followed and the boat need to have special permit from the Hungarian Shipping Authority. This permit costs €80 and is to be paid upon registration and latest 1st of July 2023 prior to the event.

Collectively, these documents form the Rules, with possible subsequent additions and/or amendments to be implemented by the race organization.

3.2. The organization reserves the right to amend the rules (as incorporated in the NR, TR, RI and REC) at any time. This will be done by means of publications on the organization’s website.
3.3. All competitors in the race are expected to know and accept the Rules. The jury may penalize competitors who ignore or break the Rules. Penalties may vary from a reprimand to disqualification and exclusion from further participation.
3.4. All questions related to the interpretation of the Rules shall be submitted to the organization in writing. Any explanation of the rules, as well as answers to written questions, may be published on the website, (or the official notice board during the race) and be binding for all competitors.
3.5. In the case of a discrepancy between languages, English shall prevail.

5.2. Routes, starting procedures and other specific race information will be published in the Race Advance Program. Unforeseen changes of the routes will be made known as soon as possible during the race.
5.3. The Organizer is entitled to conduct technical inspections of the vessels at any time of its own choosing. The participants are bound to cooperate with such inspections.

6. Race Advance Program
6.1 The Race Advance Program will be published at least one week before the start of the event on the website of the Organizer.

7. Vessel categories
7.1. The race is open to the following categories of vessels:
Open class boats: Solar powered boats with specifications as mentioned in the
SSO technical regulations 2023 and a solar array as mentioned in TR rule 6.4.2.

V20 class boats: Solar powered boats with specifications as mentioned in the
SSO technical regulations 2023 and a solar array as mentioned in TR rule 6.4.3.

Young Solar Boats: Solar powered boats with specifications as mentioned in the
SSO technical regulations 2023 and a solar array as mentioned in TR rule 6.2.

Demo boats: All teams are welcome to participate in this event. For demo boats,
per boat, a technical inspection and technical specification will be defined.

Unfortunately the V10H2 class boats with specifications as mentioned in the SSO technical regulations 2022, and all hydrogen powered boats are not be able to participate as the Hungarian municipality of Balaton doesn’t have the construction to store and move hydrogen. Please notify the organization if you’re interested in racing with H2 in Hungary and we’ll keep you posted

8. Racing numbers and publicity
8.1. Competitors shall install the racing number provided by the organization as specified in the TR 2023 rule 8.1.
8.2. Both the race organization and the competitors may be sponsored provided this is not in conflict with the moral standards and interests of the organization, at the discretion of the organizers.
8.3 By entering the event, competitors accept that they may be photographed and/or videotaped participating in the race and/or using the Championship facilities and they consent to the taking of such images and to the use, reuse, publication and republication of such images in any media, in conjunction
with the competitors name or not, without compensation and without the competitors approval of such images or any use thereof.

9. Participation and registration
9.1. The Solar Sport One events are open to anyone with a solar-powered vessel that complies with the provisions of the Rules, and that the skipper is not
younger than 16 years of age provided that the boat is unable to sail faster than 20-km/hr.
9.2. Skippers of the competing vessels that are capable of a speed of more than 20 km/h must have an official driving license from their own country. This
implicates that the minimum age of the drivers of these boats must be 18 year or older.
9.3 Each participant will sign a copy of “The Notice of Race” as a certificate of participation and will thereby accept the contents of “The Notice of Race”.
9.4 The early bird registration will be 800 EUR (from 15th February until 25th of March). The registration fee will be 870 EUR (from 26th February until 30th April). Registration deadline is the 30th of April.

10. Liability and Insurance
10.1. The Organizing Authority and any other party involved in the organization of the race named in this document will accept no liability whatsoever for any personal or material damage (including but not limited to death, injury, consequential damages, etc.) sustained prior to, during or after the race.
10.2. All owners must lodge a copy in the English language of a valid thirdparty liability insurance cover document for the vessel entered with a minimum cover of € 1.500.000,- (one and a half million euro) or the equivalent in the currency of the country of registration of the vessel, effective for the duration of the race named in this document.

11. Prizes
11.1. The following prizes will be awarded to vessels in each class based on the race score and depending the amount of entries;
o First prize
o Second prize
o Third prize
11.2. There may be additional prizes for the winner per class in a particular race element.
11.3 Price ceremony will be held on Saturday night at Balatonalmádi Móló at 18:00hrs.
11.4 After the price ceremony a parade to Balatonfured at 19:30 – 22:00 will be organized. A special prize will be awarded to the team with the most beautiful enlighted boat.

12. Additional information
12.1. Each team is responsible for its own transport arrangements, as well as for the transport of its vessels and all auxiliary materials. The vessels and the auxiliary materials must be capable of being transported via the public road in accordance with the Hungarian rules.
12.3. During the event it is forbidden to charge the batteries of the boat from any other charging equipment than the solar panels installed on the boat itself.
12.4 The adress for the race/ spectator area is:

12.5 To the courtesy of the sponsor the organization asks to have a brief presentation for spectators during the event at the venue. This is guided with a moderator and more information will be given.
12.6 For security reasons the race organizations will set up basecamp at the dock at the race venue where (at least) 1 teammember is at all time reachable during race elements.

13. Hotel, camping and catering
13.2. The organizers will provide all teams with information about camping, catering and other important matters via email and whatsapp.
13.3 The entry fee includes accommodation and catering for 6 people for 4 nights (Wednesday night through Saturday night) and catering for 3 full days  (breakfast, lunch, dinner). If your team exists of less, there will be no refund. It also includes a shot of Hungarian pálinka for every day.
If your team exists of more teammembers:
– extra camping is offered at another location. Please notify at your official registration how many tents or campers you’ll be using.
– the address of the Hotel is NEREUS Park Hotel, Balatonalmádi, Lóczy Lajos tér
– extra catering is offered for the extra teammember not included in the registration fee. Prices will be communicated separately. This is to be reserved latest 3 weeks prior to the event. Catering will be served at Nereus Park hotel unless communicated differently and lunch will be packed to bring.
