STRATEGIC SPRINT ON LAKE BALATON: TON’S RACE SHAKES UP THE STANDINGS ON DAY 2 OF CORECOMM SOLAR BOAT CHALLENGE 2026

Day 2 combined hands-on robotics on land with high-stakes tactical navigation on the water in Balatonalmádi. As variable winds, persistent cloud cover, and chop tested the fleet’s energy management, the overall leaderboard tightened ahead of Sunday’s final showdown.

Following the morning engineering challenge, the feature on-water event—the Ton’s Race—got underway with a 13:30 start. Running under classic star-tour sailing rules across five distinct outward legs, teams had to balance aggressive propulsion against limited solar irradiance, proving that Lake Balaton remains a demanding proving ground for solar craft.

Sunflare Protects the Top Spot; Greek Team Sidelined

Dutch squad Sunflare Solarteam (009) maintained their command of the regatta, taking 2nd place in the Ton’s Race to protect their lead atop the overall leaderboard with 5 points. Meanwhile, WhisperPower Solar Team (004) moved into 2nd place overall (13 points), and Engineers of Innovation (003) climbed to 3rd overall (17 points).

Hungary’s BME Solar Boat Team (002) delivered a steady tactical performance, claiming 8th in the discipline to advance to 4th place overall with 19 points—keeping a podium finish within reach.

Greek contender Oceanos (010) was unable to launch due to technical difficulties, receiving a default penalty score of 22 points for the heat.
