Day 1 of the CoreComm Solar Boat Challenge 2026 brought intense drama, technical tests, and exceptional racing to Balatonalmádi as ten international teams tackled heavy chop and strong winds on Lake Balaton.
With race control adjusting the schedule in the morning, the competition opened with the high-precision Slalom race before moving into the afternoon Time Trial. Heavy swell and challenging waves tested the structural limits, waterproofing, and telemetry of the custom-built vessels, providing a formidable engineering test.
Sunflare Solarteam Dominates the Time Trial
The afternoon Time Trial proved to be an extreme endurance challenge under demanding wave conditions. The Dutch squad Sunflare Solarteam (009) delivered a masterclass in solar racing, navigating the course with unmatched efficiency and blistering pace to secure a dominant victory.
Demonstrating the severity of the lake conditions and the demanding length of the course, only two teams successfully reached the finish line within the official time limits:
Sunflare Solarteam (009) – 1st Place (Time Trial Winner)
Engineers of Innovation (003) – 2nd Place
The remaining eight teams recorded a DNF (Did Not Finish) due to weather challenges and course length.
Standings After Day 1
Following the Slalom and Time Trial disciplines, Sunflare Solarteam leads the overall standings with a low score of 3 points, followed closely by Qsolarboat (8 points), while WhisperPower Solar Team and AGH Solar Boat are tied for 3rd place with 9 points each.
