Solar Power Meets Lake Balaton: CoreComm Solar Boat Challenge 2026 Kicks Off in Balatonalmádi

Ten engineering teams, four nations, over 130 competitors, and three days of high-stakes racing powered purely by the sun — between August 28–30, 2026, the University of Pannonia, in close cooperation with the City of Balatonalmádi, proudly hosts the 4th edition of the CoreComm Solar Boat Challenge at Lake Balaton.

Taking place at the scenic Szent Erzsébet Liget in Balatonalmádi, this premier international solar regatta brings together the sharpest young engineering minds from the Netherlands, Greece, Poland, and Hungary. Alongside the cutting-edge races on the water, visitors of all ages can enjoy hands-on sustainability games, family programs, and live evening DJ sessions right on the lakeshore.

More than a regatta: A crucible for future engineers

The CoreComm Solar Boat Challenge is far from an ordinary boat race. Each participating university crew designs, engineers, fabricates, and continuously optimizes their own solar-powered electric vessels from scratch.

Throughout months of preparation, students translate advanced theoretical knowledge in mechanical engineering, electronics, mechatronics, power systems, and computer science into real-world, high-performance watercraft. Lake Balaton serves as the ultimate proving ground, where solar irradiance, battery management systems, hydrodynamics, and tactical piloting are tested under intense competitive pressure.

Cheering for the home teams: Pannon Solar and BME at the starting line

Among the ten contenders, Hungarian fans will have two stellar teams to rally behind:

  • -University of Pannonia (Host Team): Returning to their home waters with Sparky, their custom-built, continuously refined solar raceboat engineered right here in Veszprém.
  • -Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME): Bringing their top-tier engineering expertise to challenge the elite international field.


They will face formidable international competition from experienced solar racing teams hailing from Dutch, Greek, and Polish technical universities, all competing under strict technical regulations.

What to Expect: Disciplines Testing Speed, Agility, and Endurance

Spectators along the Balatonalmádi shoreline will witness five distinct, demanding race formats across the three days:

  • -Time Trial (Friday): A pure test of speed and hydrodynamic efficiency where boats race against the clock over a set course.
  • -Slalom (Friday): High-speed maneuverability challenge requiring pilots to navigate sharp buoy turns with precision under strict time penalty rules.
  • -Ton’s Race (Saturday): A strategic long-distance points race requiring teams to map and execute the optimal sequence of buoy legs within a fixed time window.
  • -Endurance Race (Sunday): A multi-hour marathon where energy harvest, battery thermal efficiency, and steady cruising speed determine who completes the most laps.
  • -Match Race (Sunday): A thrilling, head-to-head knockout duel on parallel inner and outer courses.

The CoreComm Solar Boat Challenge is equally dedicated to educating and inspiring the public. From Friday through Sunday, Szent Erzsébet Liget transforms into a lively festival hub featuring:
